The project recognized food waste as one of the major challenges of the modern world and focused on raising awareness about the issue and finding a common solution to the problem shared by the communities in the cross-border area.
The markets in the two biggest urban centres in the region, Osijek and Pécs, set out to set up a network including food producers, distributers and the final consumers in order to raise awareness about the scale of this global problem and try and find an eco-friendly solution for the local and regional needs.
The project included several workshops focusing on the problem of food waste which resulted in a joint document proposing a viable solution for the markets in the region. Additionally, the project connected the local markets with the local associations dealing with disadvantaged groups and set up a pilot programme of collection of food waste from the markets and its donation to the indigenous people in the region.
The raise the awareness of the public to this ever-growing concern, several public cultural events were held where food made out of left-over produce from the markets was served to the general public.
